The Butterfly Effect (2012)

The 'Butterfly Effect', termed by Edward Lorenz in the 1960's is a complex chain of mathematics that illustrates the concept of 'sensitive dependence upon initial conditions.'

The Butterfly is both the beginning and the end of another complex chain, metamorphoses.

Can the same be said of the twist in the tale regarding the lives of the citizens of this island over the last number of years.   From the economic miracles of the 'Celtic Tiger' era, when Ireland was the envy of the world,  to an economic meltdown that is going to effect us from many generations to come.

Element's of Blank

Sanding these tables and chairs, to the point of obsession, almost, was a lengthy process that allowed me to open up a mental space in which to de-familiarise the familiar, and to gradually disintegrate my fixation on their traditional function and form. Through the experimentation and altering process, each piece managed to acquire a creepy agency all of its own, emphasising, a condition of uncertainty and dislocation. No longer functional, they maintain a peculiar sence of familiarity and estrangement, questioning our presumptions that things are, as they appear to be. A dark playfulness exudes from each that is distinct and unsettling; an un-nerving effect, intended, to delve into the shadowy realms of our subconscious.
